What is bht made of

However, consumers are afraid there may be possible side effects at high doses and maybe it is this reason that General Mills removed BHT in many of its cereals in 3. Vitamin E can be an alternative if people want to replace it. An ADI of 0. The following are some of its uses 8 :. It is an approved ingredient in Australia and New Zealand with the code number Function Class: food additives, antioxidants. Yes, it is vegan as the raw materials — 4-methylphenol and isobutylene are all derived from petroleum; and the animal-derived products are not used in the manufacturing process of BHT, so it is suitable to the diet of vegetarians.

Its antioxidative performance is similar with that of BHA, but less effective than TBHQ and PG, mainly due to the number of hydroxyl groups, substitution groups, and substitution positions in the structure. What kinds of food labels have you found this ingredient in, feel free to let me know in the comments. Founder of FoodAdditives. I dont think ypu should be eating foods with artificial lab manumactured componemts on a regular basis, thats where i agree you might have problems in the future.

Jeff January 19, AM. Mark: I find it interesting that you claim that there are people who want to eat "bht", after all, it's an additive to preserve freshness and if there is any empirically validated scientific evidence that BHT has the potential to harm one's health, which in case there is, then, we must take that into consideration, as our medical health profession is based on scientific evidence.

What would make sense is that if there are those who want to "eat bht" as you put it, then perhaps they can sell BHT to those people in its synthetic form.

That might be perhaps more logical than suggesting that there would be any significant majority of persons who would choose to have BHT as the preservative in the cereal when others would work as well: they are purchasing the cereal for its taste and not its choice of a preservative.

It shouldn't matter one way or antoher right? Out of curiosity why do you want it in your cereal? I never said people "want" to eat bht.

Selling bht would not be practical in my opinion, mostly because that's where there really might become a problem in over consumption leading to health problems. It's up to a consumer to be aware of their own personal preferences whether they care about bht or not.

I'm not trying to say that any people who want bht free options have a bad opinion at all, I really just think that there is a fine line between worrying about being healthy me , and worrying too much about preservatives in general. James Bosso July 13, PM. There are people who would choose to 'eat' BHT. A book from the late 70's or early 80's was written by some masters level students called "life extension".

I think they sold the rights to the name to a store chain. You may have seen one of their stores. This young couple promoted consumption of BHT. They thought that we did not get enough of it in our food supply.

They thought that this and other synthetic chemicals would assist the body and extend our lives. They noted that BHT was an alternative treatment for herpes and that the suspected mechanism was exposing the underlying structure of the virus to the body's defenses by stripping off the outer coating.

Cindy March 3, PM. Delicia Ambrosino March 26, PM. I'd rather see activism on whole, green, organic foods A to Z at prices everyone can afford. I'd rather see activism on cleaning up and stopping the damage of our oceans as they, the oceans, suck a lot of CO2 out of the atmosphere cleansing what we breathe, make it so we have water on land so we can eat, farm, and drink, and keep the weather "normal" which hasn't been the case for years, and finally, helps to keep temperatures normal for whatever area including desert, the arctics, temperate, sub-tropical, and tropical.

Sylvia Earle said, "Without the blue there will be no green. Without the green there will be no us". We are extremely tied to the oceans. The water and salt content in our bodies is almost equivalent to that of the oceans.

Sharks are our one greatest hope of finding a cure for cancer though few know about it. Now, that reason alone should be enough incentive to be an activist for the oceans especially when approximately 75 million shark are caught, have their fins removed, and dumped back into the ocean alive to painfully drown or bleed out Plus because of that, sharks are apex predators which means they help keep the ocean balanced.

An unbalanced ocean is an ocean in deep trouble and therefore, so are we. So after knowing how important oceans are to our well being and there are few activists saying anything about that what do you think is more important- BHT or getting our oceans back to a healthy state? Eating clean green food, breathing clean air, having clean water, having a healthy land with normal weather and temperatures, and the medicines we need or BHT?

In my opinion, if someone wants to be an activist or something why not that and green, organic foods? After all, we get a lot of foods and medicines from the ocean. Give me a break. That's nit picking in my book. Why not go for something that's really important? Like really jumping on the band wagon to save our world and our people. Thanks for reading. David May 4, PM. Tara June 18, PM. Wouldn't that be a fear of chemotherapy? Because I'll tell you, as a cancer patient that has endured brain surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy to combat a malignant brain tumour, while I don't have a fear of chemotherapy, I do have a fear of ingesting carcinogenic foods and chemicals.

CroSel August 31, PM. Thank you Tara for your well supported comment. It's enlightening to know that BHT causes cancer in Hamsters. Bare in mind, studies such as: Will BHT cause cancer in human beings most likely is not condoned due to ethical and legal reasons of experimenting on humans.

Therefore, I would not take this research lightly and I think it's fair to extrapolate it to human beings since we're organisms as well. Isabella Kerr September 16, PM. I have been shocked with some opinions. I guess some people do not do a research. I am going to switch to other low sugar brands. Simply I do not like sweet food. Unfortunately I have had a skin cancer that showed that I am prone to have a cancer. I am sorry I did not do my research earlier. I have been eating this cereal for a long time.

Jacqueline M January 24, PM. You clearly have not read deeply into BHT, furthermore, this article does not state all of the findings. Alain Roy March 20, PM. Perhaps we can now address Sodium aluminum phosphate in rising crust pizzas.

From Nestles to Pillsbury they all claim that it's the only chemical agent known to enable the dough to rise. To my knowledge McCains introduced in a new sodium aluminum phosphate free rising crust pizzas. Best regards. Some turnovers and other rising dough pasteries incorporate this ingredient.

Name June 11, AM. This has massively increased residue levels to PPM and more, of this noxious substance in our bread and cereal. The american government which is in the pocket of the makers of glyphosate last year massively increased the permitted residue levels in farm produce anywhere from 2 times to 25 times depending on the food stuff. Now they want to force this noxious waste and their gmo waste on europe by way of TTIP that is, if you are not already eating this garbage and you easily could be.

Bread or cereal is very possibly the cause. Mickey August 25, PM. It's good to be concerned about nutrition. But it's also good to know how real science works. This self-important nazi-bloggers do no good. And no, I don't work for any food company.

I agree with the BHT being removed, probably many othe thingss should be removed as well. Is this also in Canada? I would like to know why all cereals and all foods nearly have so much sugar in them. It is usually second on the list showing the content is very high in sugar' It is not only in cereal, but all foods nearly.

Annalissa January 19, PM. So, a woman who has no background in food, nutrition, chemistry, etc. Why are you believing someone that has no idea what she's talking about? Do you not read any of the disclaimers that clearly state that she and other Bloggers are only stating their opinion, and that their conclusions aren't based on any type of actual science, that everything they write it the way they put things together.

Reminds me of all the people that believe that margarine is plastic because of a one molecule difference. Or the ones that swear up and down if you put hydrogen in something you're gonna die. Guess what sweetie Better stop drinking water, it's hydrogenated! H2 treated with Oxygen.

What can we help you find? Sorry, but your search returned no results. Try searching with different keywords. Email Submit. Looking my gluten free corn Chex cereal box that I just finished eating from…. My husband has been eating it for years. How much of the BHT actually goes into the food from the packaging. Anyone out there who knows?

Lol, Ping, dude, sodium bicarbonate is part of baking soda. We use it for our baked goods, yeah, and, so far, the only poisonings I hear about are from deadly plants and substances, such as cyanide, arsenic, etc.

The more you know, right? Its a part of ATP Adenosine triphosphate , you know, the compound that fuels every cell in your entire body? Trisodium phosphate is just the salt form of the compound. Mixed with water, it just breaks back down into sodium table salt and phosphate! These responses from people scared of words remind me so much of that Dihydrogen Monoxide science project….

Unfortunately they lost my business whenever they add BHT or potassium benzoate. Thank you for sharing much needed knowledge. When I stopped eating cereals I never had breathing issues. But then other day I ate cereal and boom it happened again with tightness in chest. Chris, good advice. In order to make an educated decision one must have all the facts, that means reading the article in its entirety — not just the first page. Better yet, thoroughly vet the information by going to a variety of legitimate websites.

Consider the source in all matters — refrain from making quick assumptions. Think again, No one can digest gluten, it causes inflammatory markers to rocket,,, the immune system goes on full alert and attacks it to try and kill it,,,, HELLO!

Not even cows can digest it and they have two stomachs!! Gluten is indeed pretty horrible. Wheat, and all grains that contain WGA, will absolutely trash your body. Net net, humans were not intended to ingest whole-grains. Hooray for wheat! Reamann Macbiatiagh — Cows have only one 1 stomach. It is used as a cheap sweetner and an anti-freezing agent. Please check what you are consuming ,some ingredients are hardcore drugs 1 is caffeine it is a replacement for cocaine.

Propalene glycol is an ingredient in antifreeze. Talk with management repeatedly every time you find these ingredients in the food they are selling you. As a consumer you have the right to full disclosure which is not being done. The package should have a warning on it like a cigarette package. Caution: Eating this food may cause cancer or tumors.

Asking for you money back is important. Talking to the management, taking up their time in a polite and respectful way is powerful. I do this often and have had the store change products … also, your talking should be to ALL of the management; I talk to the employees also when I go through the line and other customers here the discussion.. Some bakeries use Baking Powder that has aluminum in it it is not necessary or healthful. Best regards to you all.

If it is a decent store, yeah sure it might actually get through eventually. And Yes! Thank you for saying in a respectful way! Because the moment a customer is just acting especially aggressive it just makes people no matter what rank they are to no want to help. But aside from taking it up with the store you bought it from take it up to even the Corporate of that company as well as the company of the actual product you are buying. If you have more than one person upset, that will get more notice than just another person they could give a coupon or check for to make them happy and leave them alone.

I have eaten shredded wheat for 60 years I bet the first box said wheat and bht were the only ingredients. Any one know how long it has been used to preserve shredded wheat? That is why I am looking it up…..

I bought premium rounds with whole grain. That was ok but but was added to preserve freshness Just disposed in garbage. Why would Nabisco continue this unhealthy preservative. Might have changed now! Maybe more people should believe everything the government tells us. Many issues hit Americans. When food is coated with a solvent based anti-oxidant: butylated hydroxytoluene BHT..

Like a cockroach walking around the flour piled on the floor.. In essence the food is more difficult to break down and is harder on my system. I just found out that the gum I chew daily and all day.. I am in awe about my gum!!! Trident whitening. It had been difficult to diagnose by my dermatologist. So I looked at the ingredients…sure enough it contained BHT.

I think I have found the culprit of my problems. Going back to the dermatologist Thursday to discuss. Thanks Valerie!! This is disinfo. BHT is probably one of the only good food additives there is. It kills Viruses, you can even cure Aids with it. The fact that one can cure cancer and viruses with it makes it a drug, and not something anyone should consume on a regular basis. Furthermore, although many drugs do exactly what it is claimed, they all have side effects that are rather nasty.

A drug used properly will be a last resort and again, should never be consumed or used on a regular basis. People really need to think about that. Studies are never done on the accumulative effect of exposure to the hundreds or thousands of artificial substances we eat, breathe, and smear on our bodies every day. I found this site after buying a pack of extra-large flour tortillas from a restaurant supply store.

I should know better by now…. For example, tortillas. We see a large batch, we walk away. Or avocados. Although BHT has antiviral properties it does not cure aids. But you are right that the fact that it has antiviral properties has nothing to do with whether it should be used as a food additive. Actually kevin is on to something.

There are no strong studies linking this as a carcinogen. There is plenty of bad stuff out there and additives are silly. But this does have evidence that it can fight cancer and lots of viruses. HIV and Aids is a virus. Whether it cured it would depend on the severity and the persons immune system. Sounds crazy but Kevin is on track. This is the last food additive i would be concerned about… lets start with EDTA and Artificial food coloring…. Sugar in general. In short BHT has too many benefits to be really worried about it.

And im a health NUT! I eat mostly raw veggies, and do eat a little grassfed meat or fish at night. One more thing. People do buy this and take this as a supplement for a multitude of reasons. Thanks for posting the above links, Dab!! Pretty much the same conclusion that I have found while researching BHT. But, it seems that no one else on this site has bothered to look it up for themselves.

Very sad. Not surprised…. Bad mouthing BHT is not disinfo. I have avoided preservatives for years because my lips or eyes will swell up but today I inadvertently got some BHT ensure enough my lip swelled up. That is why I am here researching, I was watching a video that claimed it is an antiviral.

The only way to be sure you are not consuming chemicals and supplements is not to eat anything at all. Good luck! Just make your own food from whole foods raised properly: organic or homegrown produce, pasture-raised meats and poultry, wild seafood, pasture-raised dairy and eggs. Then learn how to cook it right — not difficult and delicious. Saying chemicals in our food is bad just makes educated people ignore you. What you really mean is synthetic or extracted additives which may be harmful.

Also probably not as simple or straightforward as you think. Nor do the manufacturers of such products for that matter. Google Dr. Sebi and learn the truth. This black man has cured cancers, aids, blindness, paralysis, high blood pressure, etc… With seeded fruits, vegetables and alkaline water!

And this He did in ! There are many innocuous products used as ingredients in dangerous products. Great post! I just decided to do a look up because I know BHT is in a lot of preserved meats and other products. Most natural sunscreens make your skin look white. Back to the drawing board…. No one said anything about your skin colour, relax.

Zinc makes your skin white. So many are so quick to pull the race card! Nona, please display your intelligence, or lack there of, elsewhwere. If you do not understand after reading this far, then any further attempt to enlighten is meaningless as it will surely be overly difficult for you to understand.

Please put your card back in your pocket. Amazon has it. Makes 8oz jar. Melt the coconut and beeswax over low heat. Remove from heat and cool just a bit, then add the D to the olive oil and pour in and stir. Pour some into a mixing bowl and whip; add some ZnO and whip.

Continue until all oil mixture and ZnO is in the bowl. Whip until it cools, add EOs, whip; scrape, rest, whip. Continue until all is cooled, whipped, and incorporated. Scoop into an 8oz jar. Rub it in when you use it, it is very waterproof and the white totally disappears if you rub it in a bit. Check yourself of course for pinking, but this works better than expensive store bought. I reccomend cereals from health stores like Whole Foods, or Sunset. You know, we should be glad that the companies are made to list these additives so we can avoid them.

Like, between the time you buy the cereal, and later they might use it I dunno. Also, if the company uses shortening, oil, or any other ingredient containing these preservatives these do not have to be listed separately since it part of that specific ingredient. Please keep in mind these preservatives can be used on the inside of the packaging and not be listed as an ingredient; however, every time you shake your cereal out of its box, take a cookie out of a package, etc… you could be exposed yourself to these ingredients as well.

I love frosted mini wheats with the fruit filling. I ate a bowl of it last night, then decided to check out the ingredients. Freaking BHT is in it. I mean, is BHT really that necessary? And contrary to popular belief, and the commercials, Kashi is all GMO. Take citric acid that is non fruit derived.

Look up that…. Derived from mold and produced in enormous quantities by a drug company who sells it to food manufacturers. Be cautious fellow humans! Nothing to do with fooling anyone, just a different product. I am now disposing of it! And this poison is in most chewing gum products in major stores here in the US. Even though that may be true it may not please remember Kashi is still a GMO food, they use genetically modified ingredients in every product, with the exception of there elusive organic products they say they sell, but I never see them in stores where I am.

A small example of this; my local health food store sells these gluten free muffins and rolls sold as healthful with corn syrup as the first ingredient, not to mention a bunch of other GMO laden products you can find in every aisle.

If more people shopped like that then organic food and locally grown food would be more affordable. Start small if you have to, but at least start. On another note, I think that people need to understand the reason foods like corn are GMO is so they will live through the round-up pesticide and weed control sprayed all over them… Normal corn cannot. Many of my medications have changed in appearence or size over the past ten years and never have I known it to be a dangerous thing!

I only found out because, I ran accross this article and remembered the pamphlet that comes with my prescriptions every month identifying the change in ingredients in my pills. The active ingredient the reason I take it. D Chewables has BHT in it and taking it forever and thinking it was good for me, great!! I have trouble taking big pills, so this is why I opted for chewables. Anyone have any advice for healthy alternatives, I have osteoporosis.

Mika taking ANY pills is not normal to begin with! Please take a moment to google Dr. Alkaline diet is the only way, peace and love. It is so aggravating trying to find a safe product for ourselves and our pets.

Got home and saw it has BHT in it also. Educate yourself. There goes my favorite snack. Whether in it or in the packaging material, it cant be good either way. I did not realize that corn is the main ingredient in our foods the meat we eat is now corn-fed, the majority of preservatives we ingest have a corn derivitive and our government is subsidizing these farmers to mass-produce corn.

AND conveniently enough, the key figures at the FDA also happen to be have been key figures in the few major food companies that dominate the marketplace.. I nearly lost my son at 18 mos to E-Coli and subsequent H. AND, to combat this problem.. Wish I had known all this when my son just turned 20 was born… I feel like I have been unknowingly poisoning him all this time….

All the negative side effects listed in this post are just as true for an alcoholic beverage. Also, just because a chemical has versatile used, does not make it dangerous or unhealthy. Every application listed to make BHT seem harmful also uses water in the same processes. LA and Jackie. Toluene is a much different compound than butylated hydroxytoluene. Think of chlorine and sodium chloride. One is incredibly toxic and dangerous, while the other is table salt.

Scientific names are means of identifying the structure of a compound, not its uses, benefits or harms. I agree we should eat healthier and less processed foods. I just thinks its ridiculous to think that everything out there is going to kill us. BHT is present in these mixtures of chemicals for the same reasons it is in foods- as an antioxidant.

Additionally, it should be kept in mind that data from the MSDS is mostly relevant to workers handling large quantities of product.

For example, a worker who must measure amounts of this from a barrel cold accidentally inhale a large amount of dust. I stopped drinking water because I found out the Nazis also drank it… does this mean I can drink water again?
