Maybe it is an opportunity for the coach and the Mayor to make peace. Or, at least, for Manaus and England to get to know each other better. This city of almost 2m people exists because of a fort built by the Portuguese colonists on the edge of the Rio Negro in Pictures from this period show off its wealth, with local traders dressed in French fashion, despite the local heat, and smoking cigars made with dollar bills.
But the power of this local elite would not last long: in , Brazilian production began to suffer competition from cheaper and more efficient rubber extracted from trees planted by the British in Malaya and Sri Lanka. Manaus was founded in and declared a town with the name Manaus, meaning Mother of the Gods in It was subsequently transformed into a city on the 24th of October, and re-named Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro, only to be changed back to Manaus on September 4th, The colonization of started with the building of forts; an attempt to ensure that the Portuguese were the main force in the area.
The fort helped defend against invasions such as the Invasion of the Dutch, who occupied Suriname at the time. In there was a revolt, known as Cabanagem, against the political elite of the city.
The blacks, Indians and mestizos protested and eventually took power, recruiting non-whites as they roamed throughout settlements in the region.
Power shifted between the opposing sides until in the last rebel group yielded. The revolt had a profound impact on the area that is still felt today. In the 19th Century, Manaus was also at the center of the rubber boom. Many of these have hourly rates, and are not very pleasant, and often quite smelly. The area gets dodgy in the late evenings. The climate is very hot and humid. Packing thin, light-colored clothing will help you suffer the least during the day.
Locals are often seen using umbrellas as sun-protection while walking the streets, and you should consider doing the same. Do take yellow fever vaccination at least 10 days before landing in the Amazon region. One shot of this vaccine offers lifelong protection. Manaus itself and the nearby jungle regions most tourists visit on day tours are relatively malaria-free, so one should ponder carefully if the benefit of malaria drugs offset the many inconveniences.
Malaria drugs are known to cause lack of energy and belly discomfort in a number of people, and the frequent need to visit the toilet might spoil boat rides and longer tours. Also, some doctors, following a more modern line, have been recommending tourists to carry the drugs but to only take them if symptoms arise, as this is efficient enough.
Do your own research and decide on the best approach for yourself. Mosquitos that are malaria carriers are more active from dusk to dawn. To avoid mosquito bites, apply insect repellent often, wear pants and long sleeves, and consider treating your clothes with permethrin.
Manaus is fairly safe for a Brazilian city of its size. As always, deserted streets are a bad idea after dark. Avoid the east zone, it has a really bad reputation. Understand [ edit ] The wealth of the primeval forest becomes visible first of all in the architecture of the city. Note: As of April , the land border between Brazil and Venezuela is closed.
