To help you catch-up on Bourne or experience the franchise for the first time, we recommend watching the Bourne films in order of release date, as the series is chronological. Here, then, is the best way to watch every Bourne film in order. When you first see Bourne Matt Damon , you meet him as an anonymous man with two gunshot wounds in his back.
The only clue is a laser projector found underneath his skin that projects the number of a deposit box in Zurich. He then sets off and eventually learns he is part of a secret program training assassins for the CIA. This same assassin then tries to find Bourne and Marie.
From there, we see him race against the CIA as the agency tries to cover up the existence of the program by murdering all those involved. Cross received similar training to Bourne through a program called Operation Outcome. Had this been the end of the Bourne movies, t would have been an epic and thrilling way to say goodbye. A Bourne movie without Damon did seem like a strange idea and it was a gamble that never truly paid off.
But it should not be outright dismissed as there is a lot to like here with Renner doing a good job at filling in for Damon and some stunts that rivalled the best the series had to offer.
We certainly would not be opposed to a Damon and Renner team up — which has been mooted as a possibility by Damon himself. Alicia Vikanders character was the person to be hunting him down and the future Tomb Raider star was a fantastic foil who we would love to see again. While the James Bond and Mission: Impossible franchises went through tonal crises in the early 21st century, Bourne became the hardened spy series of the Bush era.
Each of the films is fascinating in its own right. Here are all five Bourne movies, ranked worst to best. Jason Bourne fails to justify bringing the character back after a near-perfect trilogy. It's a theoretically interesting concept, and Damon commits to playing the generally empathetic character as a relentless killing machine.
It's unfortunate because so much of the filmmaking from Paul Greengrass is top-notch. Jeremy Renner was seemingly handed the torch of two franchises Bourne and Mission: Impossible where the original star just stayed.
Marta Shearing have an engaging relationship. Shearing sees the subject of her research struggling before her eyes, so their journey of self-discovery is simultaneous.
Set just a few weeks after the end of Supremacy, putting this one in as well, Bourne is tracked down by a journalist working to uncover the secret assassin training programme he was part of.
However, the CIA is under the control of a new boss who seeks to cover-up the programme, by targeting everyone involved — including Bourne. Arguably the best film in the franchise, Ultimatum was a hit with critics who praised the action, performances and, sound design and story. Thought of as one of the best films of , it was nominated for — and won — three Oscars.
However, Outcome is exposed to the public and CIA bosses attempt to end the programme and kill its agents. However Cross survives to live another day and, perhaps more importantly, no longer needs the experimental pills to enhance his mind and body. The film generally received mixed reviews from critics, who were disappointed in Damon's absence. It does, in general, feel a little out of place, as if a spin-off of sorts. We have this one down as happening around , early — some of it is happening at the same time as Ultimatum, though it skips forward eight months too, finishing up in Twelve years after Ultimatum and Bourne has gone into hiding again thanks to the advice of CIA analyst Nicky Parsons, who reveals that Bourne's father was somehow involved in the secret training programme.
